8th October 2007: Super Borovets Holds Opening Ceremony

Today ground was broken on the long awaited 'Super Borovets' project. The opening party was attended by Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev and saw the beginning of construction of the new gondola, which connects the resort to the top of the mountains and the ‘Markoudijk’ runs. The project, which will take place in three stages, is expected to be completed by 2012 and when finished will have given Borovets Resort 19 new runs and 10 more ski lifts, as well as an array of luxury hotels and two storey apartments which will increase the living area to 6,000 sq.km. Furthermore, at the foot of the resort summer amenities such as tennis courts, a golf course and soccer pitches will be added. The whole of the resort will be serviced by the new Rila Motorway, which runs directly from Sofia to Borovets.

The plans behind the development, approved by Saxkoburgotski’s previous Government, are being funded by the investment group 'Rila-Samokov 2004', who's associates are 'Equest International Fund', 'Samokov Municipality',  the Oman's Sultan Public fund and Bulgaria’s biggest construction company: 'Glavbolgarstroy'. The total worth of the project is valued at around 500 millions Euros.

Additionally, further guarantees have been given by authorities and investors that 'Super Borovets' will not threaten Rila National Park and its nature, because nothing will be built with in its territories. This opens the door for the Rila National Park to be valued and then join the first class Eco Tourism Network, meaning increased summer appeal for Borovets.

It’s been a long time coming, but 'Super Borovets' is now well and truly under construction.
